Bring Her Back

If you're into horror that blends the supernatural with psychological tension and a heavy dose of family drama, Bring Her Back might just be your next must-watch. Directed by Danny and Michael Philippou—the duo behind Talk to Me—this Australian horror flick dives deep into grief, trauma, and the terrifying lengths people will go to for love.
The story kicks off with two step-siblings, Andy and Piper, who are sent to live with a new foster mother, Laura, after their father's death. Things get creepy fast. Laura, played by Sally Hawkins in a performance that critics are raving about, isn’t your average foster mom. She’s got a tragic past, a mute foster son named Oliver, and a freezer full of secrets—literally. As the siblings try to adjust, they uncover a disturbing occult ritual that puts them in serious danger.
Bring Her Back is not your typical jump-scare horror. It’s more of a slow-burn psychological thriller with supernatural elements that build to a disturbing climax. The film leans into themes of loss, guilt, and manipulation, all wrapped in a chilling atmosphere. If you liked the unsettling tone of movies like Hereditary or The Babadook, this one will probably hit the mark.
The performances are a standout, especially from Billy Barratt as Andy and newcomer Sora Wong as Piper. Critics have praised their emotionally raw portrayals, and Hawkins’ turn as the unhinged Laura is being called one of the film’s biggest strengths. The visuals are intense, the practical effects are gruesome, and the tension rarely lets up.
That said, this movie isn’t for everyone. If you’re squeamish or not into horror that gets pretty dark and disturbing, you might want to skip it. Some critics felt the emotional depth didn’t quite land, and a few found the VHS occult subplot a bit over-the-top. But overall, it’s been well-received, with an 89% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a solid B+ CinemaScore from audiences.
So, if you're looking for a horror film that’s creepy, emotionally charged, and just a little bit twisted, Bring Her Back delivers. Just maybe don’t watch it alone. Or near a pool.
