Predator: Badlands

If you're a fan of sci-fi action with a twist, Predator: Badlands might just be your next favorite watch. This 2025 entry is the ninth film in the Predator franchise, but it stands out by flipping the script—this time, the Predator is the hero.

Directed by Dan Trachtenberg (who also helmed Prey), the film introduces us to Dek, a young, runt Predator cast out from his clan on Yautja Prime. Determined to prove himself, Dek sets off on a dangerous mission to hunt the Kalisk, a seemingly unkillable apex predator, on the hostile planet Genna. Along the way, he forms an unlikely alliance with Thia, a damaged android from the Weyland-Yutani Corporation, and a native creature named Bud. What follows is a wild, visually stunning journey full of survival, betrayal, and unexpected bonds.

Elle Fanning takes on a dual role as both Thia and her synthetic sister Tessa, while Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi brings Dek to life with a mix of physical performance and motion capture. The film dives deep into Predator culture, even developing a full language for the Yautja species, and gives fans a closer look at their homeworld and traditions.

Visually, Badlands is a treat. With creature effects by Studio Gillis and Wētā Workshop, and VFX from heavy hitters like ILM and Framestore, every frame is packed with detail. The film’s style draws inspiration from everything from Mad Max 2 to Shadow of the Colossus, giving it a gritty, mythic feel that sets it apart from previous entries.

Critics have responded positively, with an 85% score on Rotten Tomatoes and an A- CinemaScore from audiences—both highs for the franchise. It’s a bold move to make a Predator the protagonist, but it pays off, offering a fresh perspective and emotional depth not usually seen in the series.

That said, if you're expecting the usual R-rated bloodbath, be aware: this is the first mainline Predator film to carry a PG-13 rating. While it still delivers action and suspense, it leans more into character development and world-building than pure carnage.

Predator: Badlands is perfect for longtime fans open to a new take, or newcomers looking for a standalone sci-fi adventure.
