The Fantastic 4: First Steps

Marvel’s First Family is back—and this time, they’re skipping the origin story and diving straight into cosmic chaos. The Fantastic Four: First Steps is a retro-futuristic superhero adventure set in a stylized 1960s world, where Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Ben Grimm, and Johnny Storm are already established heroes. But when a planet-devouring space god named Galactus sets his sights on Earth, the team must juggle saving the world with their own growing family drama.
Directed by Matt Shakman and featuring a star-studded cast—Pedro Pascal as the stretchy genius Reed, Vanessa Kirby as the emotionally intelligent Sue, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as the rock-solid Ben, and Joseph Quinn as the fiery Johnny—this film leans into the family dynamics and vintage sci-fi vibes that made the Fantastic Four iconic in the comics. Julia Garner also makes a memorable impression as the Silver Surfer, a mysterious herald with a tragic past.
What sets this film apart is its bold aesthetic. Think mid-century modern meets space-age tech, with a dash of Kubrick-inspired visuals. The production design is rich with detail, from the Baxter Building’s sleek interiors to a lovingly recreated 1960s New York. The film also introduces H.E.R.B.I.E., the team’s charming robot sidekick, and even features cameos from the cast of the unreleased 1994 Fantastic Four movie—yes, really.
If you’re a longtime Marvel fan or someone who loves a good sci-fi throwback, this one’s for you. It’s packed with action, heart, and a surprising amount of humor. The chemistry between the leads is a highlight, and the film’s refusal to rehash the origin story keeps things fresh. On the flip side, if you’re not into superhero flicks or retro aesthetics, this might not be your jam.
Critics have mostly praised the film for its fun tone, strong performances, and unique setting, though some felt it didn’t quite reach the emotional or narrative heights of other MCU entries. Still, it’s the highest-grossing Fantastic Four film to date and a solid setup for future appearances in upcoming Avengers movies.
Bottom line: The Fantastic Four: First Steps is a stylish, family-focused space adventure that finally gives Marvel’s original super-team the cinematic treatment they deserve.
