Alejandro G. Iñárritu turns the story of the most powerful man on earth, racing to prove he is humanity's savior before his own disaster undoes everything, into a sharp and stylish comedy. Tom Cruise leads a wicked ensemble with Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller and Michael Stuhlbarg, so there is a fresh delight in almost every scene. It is playful, a little wild, and easy to riff on afterward, which is exactly what you want on a night out.

Susanne Bier brings the Owens sisters back as they face a dark curse that threatens to unravel their family for good, and it is romance and fantasy and comedy braided into something cozy and bewitching. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are the warm, magnetic heart of it, with Joey King and Maisie Williams along for the ride, so it feels like curling up with old friends. Do plan ahead, as screenings around the city are on the sparse side this week and the few slots will go quickly.
