This week's picks for Madrid

David Ayer strands a Special Forces officer and his combat dog in the Alaskan wilderness after a plane crash, and the brutal fight that follows is all stakes and no filler. It plays in English here in Madrid, and that frozen landscape is built for a big screen. At 85% on Rotten Tomatoes and 7.5 on IMDb, it earns the tension it trades in.

Georgia Oakley's Sense and Sensibility is a tender, witty romance about love and the bond between sisters, with Daisy Edgar-Jones and Caitríona Balfe leading the way. It is the kind of swooning, heartfelt drama that leaves you both a little misty and talking the whole walk home, and it sits at a lovely 79% on Rotten Tomatoes and 7.2 on IMDb.

This returning animated classic from director Henry Selick is a magical fantasy that blends Halloween fun with Christmas warmth, making it a lovely choice for a relaxed family outing. At a breezy 76 minutes and rated PG, it is best suited to children who enjoy a little friendly spookiness, while adults will savor the imaginative animation. It holds a glowing 95% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 7.9 on IMDb.
